At the heart of my mission is the creation of a coalition dedicated to promoting disability representation in politics. This initiative aims to empower individuals with disabilities to pursue elected office and advocate for policies that support their full participation in public life.
Empowering Candidates with Disabilities
The coalition will provide crucial support, including PR and media training, to help candidates navigate public scrutiny and effectively communicate about their disabilities. It will also offer mentorship from current and former elected officials with disabilities, ensuring tailored guidance and encouragement.
Advocating for Systemic Change
Individuals with disabilities are the largest minority group in the United States, yet their representation in political office does not reflect their population size. This disparity contributes to the oppression of the disability community, as policies affecting disabilities often lack the firsthand perspective of those impacted. Many potential candidates may hesitate to run for office due to fears of discrimination based on their disability. However, as I've realized, owning one's disability and advocating openly is essential to reducing stigma and effecting real systemic change.
Ensuring Inclusivity and Accessibility
The coalition will advocate for necessary accommodations during campaigns and in office, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can participate fully in the political process. This includes advocating for legislation to safeguard social security benefits during campaigns.
Building an Inclusive Political Landscape
Together, we will build a more inclusive political landscape where individuals with disabilities are not only encouraged but empowered to run for office. By amplifying their voices and experiences, we will work towards policies that reflect the diversity and needs of all constituents.
Join me in creating a coalition that champions disability representation in politics, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.
